New Glass Panels in Transoms

Two Vanities flanking double doors into master bedroom

Chicago Brownstone for Fashion Doyenne

item6c

A focused, savvy business woman, this client was a take charge and get it done type. A few years earlier we had done a small condominium in a Meis Van De Rowe-esque high rise in the heart of the city. Her business was city, her residence was suburban. It gave her a place to stay on late work nights and a more convenient spot for entertaining where her friends and clients were.

When marriage to a New Yorker presented itself, the suburbs were out and she decided to commit to in-town living. Both were in the Fashion business and would be traveling between metropolises. A brownstone found, our work began.

The structure was sound but the floor plan needed amending to make the space work for two adults and a now-and-again visit from a college student son. We also focused on restoring architectural elements that had been lost or removed over the tears. The grand double doors street-side, had been reduced to one and a boring infix. The opening was restored and heavy custom doors re-milled correct to the period. Fortunately the arched over-door window had remained. Decorative mouldings had to be restored in some places and faithfully added where we made minimum architectural changes. We added a marble floor in the entry, new chandeliers and replaced missing double doors that had separated the parlour and dinning room.

We needed closed storage and book shelves so I designed new cabinetry to flank the opening from the living room into the dinning room.

A "his and hers" bath was a must. It must be small, but big enough. I took in a small closet over the front entry which was common to the master bedroom on the second floor. We carved out two separate vanities, a linen closet, a comfortable tub / shower and a toilet compartment. Mirroring the walls above each vanity and hanging french mirrors on their surface helped to create the illusion of space. We also were able to add a new double closet in the bedroom. I designed a new custom armoire to house a television and clothing storage and a new bed with presence and a little french flavor.

The upstairs main bath was land locked between bedrooms and had no daylight until we discovered a skylight with a well, covered over and forgotten years earlier. It was reopened and refurbished.

All doors on the second floor and the first floor hall opening into the dining room had been fitted with transoms that had been filled with fiberboard and sealed. I designed new etched glass panels and we made the transoms work again.

This was a great project and the client trusted my vision and creativity. I must thank her for her faith in me, for that kind of understanding makes all the difference in the end product. Her sense of fashion and design helped us to work as a team and form a focused design plan.

Her contractor / brother and his "dream team" were indeed a dream to work with and made the job smooth and enjoyable.

"What's not to like?"
